Facebook announced today that they are testing a new personal digital assistant which is powered not only be automated intelligence but also by humans that can help make purchases, deliver information and book appointments similar to how Siri works.
The new virtual assistant called, M will exist inside of Facebook’s Messenger app and can do much more than just the basics of what Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana can do. We are told that Facebook’s M assistant can even make money transfers. We aren’t exactly sure what security mechanisms are in place for the financial aspects of M but this could be either a really great feature to have or a complete nightmare if hackers found an exploit.
“Unlike other AI-based services in the market, M can actually complete tasks on your behalf. It can purchase items, get gifts delivered to your loved ones, book restaurants, travel arrangements, appointments and way more.” David Marcus a spokesperson for Facebook said today. “This is early in the journey to build M into an at-scale service. But it’s an exciting step towards enabling people on Messenger to get things done across a variety of things, so they can get more time to focus on what’s important in their lives.”
No word yet on when the M assistant will be made available to the general population but a beta test is going on now with a select number of participates.
