Unboxing OSRAM LIGHTIFY Starter Kit and Flood LED Light
The OSRAM LIGHTIFY Starter Kit for your home comes with the Tunable White 60-Watt Equivalent LED Bulb that is dimmable and also capable of being tuned in color from warm to cool.
The back of the for the tunable white 60watt bulb shows what you get in the box. A checkbox under the bulb only, indicating that you only receive the bulb. However, if you purchase the Starter Kit you also receive the LIGHTIFY Gateway, which is required if you want to utilize the app for controlling the bulb. If you plan to use your existing ZigBee compatible hub, you can opt not to purchase the LIGHTIFY Gateway.
Here’s a picture of the Tunable White 65 Flood, which is essentially the same as the bulb above but this bulb is more wattage and is also a flood light which are great for ceiling CAN lights.
The rear of the box also shows similarly of what you receive. At the bottom you’ll find the lighting facts which tells you the life expectancy of the bulb along with energy costs.
The LED bulb itself is actually pretty heavy and all of the smart components are located in the white base of the bulb which I’m sure contributes to some of this weight.
Similar, the flood light is the same. Both bulbs came with a small installation guide which illustrates not only how to screw a light bulb in (if you didn’t know) but also how to connect and configure it with the Gateway device.
The LIGHTIFY Gateway is required if you wish to utilize the OSRAM LIGHTIFY app on your Android or iOS devices. It’s a very small module that plugs directly into an outlet. I really love the small size of this device and the simplicity of it.
Here’s a side view of the module, showing the size a bit better.
The front has a LED light to indicate if its working and some other things I’m sure, but we’ll find out later about that in the technical portion of the review.
The rear plug of the module has a lot of useful information. It has your serial number, WiFi MAC address, the SSID and yes it sets up its own WiFi network for initially connecting and configuring the device, along with the password for it.
Read on to the next page and we’ll start installing the LIGHTIFY system and configuring it!
