CREE LED Connected Smart Light Bulb Review

CREE Connected Smart LED Bulb - Back of Box

Setup CREE LED Connected Bulb on Wink Hub

I had really hoped that I would have had our Samsung SmartThings hub in our hands at the time of this review but instead we’ll be setting up the Cree LED Connected Bulb on a newly installed Wink hub. The instructions were very straight forward and I followed them exactly. The first thing that I did was screw the Cree LED bulb into an existing light socket and then went on to the Wink iPhone app to begin adding the product to my hub.

The Scan Barcode method is definitely the easiest way to add a product to your Wink Hub, and the Cree LED Connected bulb is no exception to this.

Find the barcode on the Cree box and allow the app to scan it. It will then automatically determine what type of product it is and will add it to your Wink Hub. After two or three prompts you’ll be asked to turn the device on and in this case, our Cree LED bulb. Flip the switch on and then the Cree LED bulb will start communicating with the Wink Hub or other hubs which you may have installed.

What you can do with your newly installed Cree LED bulb is very much dependent on what type of smart home hub that you have installed. While they all have similar features, some may have additional ones which others do not have. One of the things that I did with my Cree LED bulb was setup an event to begin at 10PM which dims the light into what I like to call “night light mode”. This allows me to leave the light on for the kids but conserves power and I never need to worry about leaving it on or turning it off.

My son has a hard time waking up for school so I thought I would test the Cree LED Connected bulbs in his room to see if it could help him (and me) with getting up in the mornings. My kids are heavy sleepers and they generally do not like any light in their rooms when they sleep but when they do have light, it tends to wake them up. I setup the Cree LED bulb to begin brightening about 30 mins before they usually need to awake for school. I had it increase the brightness every 2 minutes or so between the first minute and about 10 minutes in, the bulb was completely bright so gradually brighten the room.

To my amazement, my son actually got out of bed that morning without me having to wake him up! Now, since I could schedule this – it only happens during the weekdays so I can make sure I get to sleep in too, on the weekends!

Another way that I tested utilizing the Cree LED connected bulb was as an entrance light upon me arriving at home. Since the Wink Hub knows when I come and go based on my phone’s location, I setup the Cree LED bulb to turn off when I leave the house but also turn back on when I arrive. The bulb was plugged into a lamp near the entrance to my garage and this made a perfect way for my house to be lit when I arrived, which was especially useful late at night.

As far as the lighting o the Cree LED bulb, it was fantastic! The light was very bright and evenly dispersed with a warm glow. I do wish that you could change the temperature (or color) of the light from blue to the warmer color, like the Technolamp LED WiFi bulbs. This would allow for you to easily match the bulb to any room or lighting condition.
